(Continued from page 14) down the pew, while balancing the tray in the other hand, and pass it off to the person sitting beside you? Guest #2: You have accepted the Lord’s invitation to be a guest at His table. The Lord is present. Are you worthy to be at this banquet? As the tray comes to you, will you take the tray with both hands, turn, and pass the tray on to the person sitting beside you, remove both hands from the tray, leaving both hands free to humbly accept the elements as offered and served to you by the person sitting beside you. Who will you be at the Lord’s Table next Sunday? Guest #1 or Guest #2
Are you the same guest at the Lord’s table as you are at a State banquet? Do you come to the Lord’s Table with a ME FIRST attitude? I am entitled to be here; therefore I am entitled to take my fair share come what may. If I drop the tray or some of the element spills over or drops while I toss the tray to the person beside me who cares—not me. If there’s none left for you - too bad - at least I will have had my portion, my entitlement. Or do you come to the table in awe of the sacrifice the Lord has made for you and sit humbly as the person sitting beside you offers to you a gift - the elements of salvation. Can you humble yourself to be served by the person sitting beside you as the session members humble themselves to be served by the minister and as the minister humbles himself to be served by a session member or will you grab for yourself with no consideration or concern for those sitting beside you? What kind of a guest are you at the Lord’s Table – a recipient or a grabber? Do you consider the elements of salvation yours for the taking, or a gift offered to you? Who will you be at the Lord’s Table next Sunday Guest #1 or Guest #2? How the elements get from the tray to your hand is a choice you make by yourself for yourself. This is God’s body broken for you! This is God’s blood shed for you! If you believe this then you and you alone must decide. Is it mine for the taking or is it a gift given for me for the redemption of my sin? How will the elements get from the tray to your hand next Sunday morning? |
