St. Andrew’s Memorial Church will be holding a Yard Sale on Saturday, May 26^th from 7:30 a.m. till noon. Items from your home that you no longer want or need may be able to find a new home at the sale. We need help on Friday night and Saturday morning to get set up so if you have a few hours to spare on either Friday night or Saturday morning, please come out and give us a hand.

Many hands make light work. All the money made at the yard sale will go to the general operations of the Church. We will also be holding a bake table at the same time so please have your baking here on Saturday morning.

Heavenly Horticulture

As mentioned last Sunday, the City of Mississauga kindly delivered two tons of compost for our Church Gardens, free of charge. We would like to acknowledge with thanks, two hard-working ladies, members of Heavenly Horticulture, who distributed the compost in the Church Gardens

– Chandra Kelley and Eileen Madore.

EVANGEL HALL REPORT

On Thursday May 10th we delivered to Evangel Hall:

9 packages of Cookies

23 loaves of Sandwiches

1 Fruit tray 2 bags of apples

1 Mystery box/assorted amenities

3 bags of clothing

& 1 cheque.

JUNE 3RD LUNCHEON

It appears there is some misunderstanding about the Jubilee Service: Just to clarify -

Following the June 3rd Communion service, there will be a free will offering Luncheon. You must have a ticket if you are attending the luncheon. We need to know how many to expect so we can have enough food and gifts for all in attendance.

Tickets are available from Karen Barnaby (905 270-2844) or E-mail kcb@eol.ca to reserve a ticket. Unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate anyone without a ticket. If you will not be attending service until June 3rd you can get your tickets in your box in the Message Center.

The Diamond Jubilee Committee

With most major ideas decided upon; the work now began in earnest. Steps 1-7 for the souvenir program have been completed.

One suggestion that received 100% agreement had to be denied. We inquired about getting a photographer to take a professional photo of those in attendance at the luncheon. The cost of $200.oo for set up fees and 2 prints just couldn’t be justified at this time.

Step 2a of the program production was to take 90 seconds to produce. We reluctantly agreed to settle on a different design taking only 30 seconds to produce. We decided that the copy for the Queen and for the church archives deserved the 90 second treatment. For the rest of us sorry we had to settle for the 30 second version.

I was given some great suggestions over the week some of which we can incorporate others we can’t, mainly because of cost. But this is your luncheon. Please keep your suggestions and ideas coming. There are no bad ideas just limited funds.

We may have to use some disposable plastic at the luncheon. If this in any way offends your “Go Green” conscience we are truly sorry.

Spring hats and gloves for the ladies and suits or kilts for the gentlemen are encouraged.

Next week we hope to have the program covers ready to be scored. How long do you think it will take to score 120 pages. Check back for the answer next week.

On Thursday we met over coffee to go over all the fine points of the luncheon. The most difficult part was determining – timing. How long does it take for x number of people to do this chore. In the discussion other ideas and suggestions came forth that I would have never thought of until the event was over. After my meeting I’m sure there will be fewer “if only we had thought of this” when the committee sits down to recap the event and produce our report.

How can you help this week?

Most of us have some memorabilia of our British monarchy. A cup and saucer, a book, a scrapbook , a plate etc. Well if you can dig it out it was suggested we have a display table where we can display our cherished monarchy memorabilia. We hope you can find your treasure for the table.
It has been suggested that by June 3rd our gardens just might be showing some great colour. If your garden has some smaller flowers such as pansies and violets, lily of the valley in bloom we could use them on the tables. If you have some larger longer stem blossoms or flowers we could put them in vases around the room. So all flowers are welcome on Saturday June 2. We’ll be too busy on the 3rd to give them the attention they deserve.
No one makes better sandwiches and goodies than the folks at St. Andrew’s. If you can donate a loaf or two of sandwiches or a pan or two of goodies we would be most grateful. All we ask is the you call me Karen Barnaby 416-259-4458 .

If there is no answer just leave your name and number and what you would like to donate sandwiches or sweets, I’ll check back with you to see I got the message correct and enter your data in
the book. You can contact me by E-mail as well. My e mail address kcb@eol.ca We need your name and contribution on the list so we can ensure there is enough food for the occasion. Dr. Human reminds us each Sunday “This is the day the Lord has made, Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” As with all major occasions in our lives we go first to God’s house to give thanks and then we begin our celebrations. On June 3rd we have the opportunity in our worship and communion service, to remember the sacrifice God made on our behalf then we go on to celebrate ,rejoice and to thank God for planting us in a country that has as it’s Head of State, a monarch who believes in and serves our God.

The cover for the keepsake Order of Service is in the design phase. With such short leadtime, only 120 can be made so we are asking only 1 per family please.
Special table accessories and table decorations have been ordered and are in transit.
The gift for luncheon participants has been designed and is in phase one of production.

Results of Week 2

We wanted everyone who attends our June communion service to have a souvenir Order of Service so we decided to photocopy the cover of the Order of Service for all in attendance and the hand crafted Order of Service will be in the goodie bags for those attending the luncheon.

We’ve spent the bulk of our time in deciding just what to serve. In the end we decided that we should make this luncheon lilke an English Tea, and that calls for sandwiches and sweets. And who is better at making delicious sandwiches than the good folks at St. Andrew’s?

Do you have a tiered plate or a footed plate that we could borrow for the occasion

If you could help us out with this, we’d really appreciate your efforts. We are working on having an attendance of 80 for the luncheon. Our plan is to have a menu for the scrapbook. We would like to include who made what. It would be great if we could include pictures in the scrapbook of the folks with their contributions.

Trustees’ Update

Each year the congregation has an opportunity to elect at least 2 members to the Board of Trustees. To ensure that the congregation has a good appreciation for the roles and responsibilities of the Trustees, the following is an extract from the most recent mandate.

The Trustees of St. Andrew’s Memorial Church serve God through faithful stewardship of the gifts provided to the congregation. The Trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to handle the Church’s property with care, skill and diligence that a prudent person would care for his own property. The Trustees of the Church are liable for their decisions. They are guided by the Book of Forms of the Presbyterian Church of Canada as well as the Trustee Act of Ontario.

The Trustees are responsible for the Administration of the Memorial Funds, including the investment of these funds in instruments which strive to provide for both the protection of capital and its growth.

The Trustees hold the deed to the Church on behalf of the congregation and are responsible to secure adequate property/liability insurance on the building and its contents to protect against loss.

If you have any questions, please seek out one of the Trustees for a response.

Thursday May 10^th is Sandwich Day for St. Andrew’s. Please have your sandwiches, cookies, fruit and assorted goodies at the Stavebank Entrance of the church by 9:15 so that Nancy & Gordon will be able to get the goodies down to Evangel Hall by 10. Last month, you contributed to the donation: 12 packages of cookies, 28 loaves of sandwiches, apples, oranges, cupcakes and other assorted goodies. Thanks so much to all who helped out.

Prayer Request

I learned today that Sean and Bonnie Foster’s son, Matthew, was diagnosed late last week with Leukaemia. Matthew has begun treatment in hospital (McMaster) where he will be for 3-12 weeks.

Sean and his family will appreciate all of your prayers at this time. It is very difficult to watch and support a small child who is ill and I know that you will all respect Sean’s need to spend time with his family. May God’s peace that passes all understanding be very real for Sean, Bonnie, Matthew, Shannon and Erin.

The Mississauga Marathon will be held on Sunday, May 6^th starting at 7:30 a.m. You will find a map specifically designed for St. Andrew’s (on the bulletin board near the Heather Room and also on the Board above the Visitor’s Book in the main entrance of the church) illustrating the race route and road closures/restrictions that will take place. Lakeshore Road West at Mississauga Road will be closed at 8:00 a.m. and will re-open around 10:30 a.m. Parishioners arriving from west of Mississauga Road should use Lorne Park Road, to Birchview Drive, to Springhill Drive, to Tecumseh Park Drive, to Indian Road, to Indian Grove, to South Sheridan Way/QEW, to Hurontario Street and Park Street West (as illustrated on the map). Access to travel on Indian Road will be assisted by Peel Regional Police.

On Saturday, January 28^th, 251 tickets were sold to Dancing for The Compass. It was the largest turnout in 5 years! Add in the raffle proceeds of $1,215, the total profit raised for The Compass was $3,226. Thank you for your support!

KIRKIN' O' THE TARTANS

St. Andrew's Memorial in Port Credit will be holding a Kirkin' o' the Tartans service the morning of Sunday April 29, 2012, 10:30 a.m.
Please wear your plaids and help us celebrate.

The Kirkin'of the Tartan service celebrates the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. It is truly a North American custom, but based on the history of the Scots in Scotland during the days of the Act of Proscription. The wearing of the Kilt was banned in the Highlands. Legend has it that the Highlanders hid pieces of tartan and brought them to church to be secretly blessed in the service. Such a practice would have been very dangerous. Alexander Carmichael does list a prayer for the "Consecration of the Cloth" in his collection of Highland folklore, prayers and charms, but it is difficult to conclude accurately that this is a reference to the blessing of the tartan.

Instead what we do know is that during the Second World War, before the Americans joined the war, the Reverend Peter Marshall, originally from Coatbridge, Scotland, was the minister at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. He also served as Chaplain of the United States Senate before his premature death in 1949. Mr. Marshall's life story was published by his wife Catherine under the title "A Man Called Peter". The book eventually was turned into a popular film under the same title.

Desiring to draw attention to the threat that war brought to the British people, Marshall held the first Kirkin' of the Tartan service on April 27, 1941. The sermon title was "The Kirkin of the Tartan" and in it, Marshall spoke about the oppression of the Scots during the days of the Act of Proscription and then drew his congregation's attention to the global threat of cultural annihilation and genocide posed by the Nazi dictatorship. All funds raised from the service went directly to a mobile kitchen in Scotland.

The Kirkin of the Tartan services continued and are now an annual tradition at the National Cathedral in Washington. However, many Presbyterian Churches around Canada and the United States hold these services as do Scottish, Caledonian and St. Andrew's Societies around North America – and even Scotland! Kirkin' services are held year round, but popular dates remain St. Andrew's Day and Tartan Day (April 6th).

The St. Andrew’s Youth Group will again be participating in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine on April 27^th & 28^th. Over the past several years, our event has collected over $10,000 to help fight starvation and poverty. This year’s fast may be our biggest ever with four youth groups gathering here at our church. If you would like to contribute, our youth will be collecting pledges at coffee hour today.

The Compass will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of St. Andrew’s Memorial Church. The Compass does support over 350 families in the Port Credit/Lakeshore area with food supplies and other support services as needed.

The Compass is always looking for volunteers to help in the marketplace or general office duties and if you have some spare time come out on April 26^th and find out more information on the Compass and see if it would fit into your schedule.

Earth Day Workshop – On Sunday, April 22^nd at 9:30, prior to the worship service, a workshop centered around Earth Day will be held in the Heather Room. We will study historical concepts, scriptural references, as well as what A Catechism for Today has to say about caring for the earth. The workshop will be conducted by Dona Simpson as an outreach of the Christian Education Department. Everyone is welcome.

Lulu Burton's Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's

on Saturday, April 21st at 1 p.m.

This will be a celebration of Lulu's life. Lulu passed away at the age of 95 on February 28th, 2012. All are invited to attend a luncheon after the service to share their memories of Lulu with the family. Hopefully you will be able to attend.
